This example shows a solution to a problem where students need to calculate the volume of a dam. Because of the open learning nature if the software the shown example is just one possible way of solving the problem. Students are free to explore and go about solving the problem in their own way. Note: each step of the solution is on a separate layer so the layers need to be shown to see the answer in full.

This is an example which shows the layering functionality in FWC. In this example each part of the problem is on a separate layer including the hand written notes which have been written directly onto the canvas using an interactive whiteboard pen. Separating content in this way is like using the traditional OHT sheets to separate content.

This example shows a 3D object which have been created using the line tools. The sides can be pulled apart to show each individually. Fun With Construction also has a "nets" functionality which allows 3d shapes to be folded out into their various nets on the canvas and reformed into the 3D shape again at a click of the button.

Pie graph creation in FWC is a fun exercise where students create their own pie pieces and then snap them together to make a pie chart. In order to do this the students must understand the concept of 360 degrees representing a whole and also do their calculations manually. This enforces and enhances their understanding of the concept.

This resource is used to graphically demonstrate the relationships in the equation
A sq – B sq = (A + B) x (A - B). The dimensions of squares and rectangles are used to show the relationships. Thanks go to Ian Thomson of Ormiston College for first showing me this example and his three video explanations are below.

Secondary Functionality - Some Video Examples

The video examples below show some of the functionality in
FWC which has been specifically designed for secondary teachers.
Click on the images to view the video in a new window.

Angle Tools - We have 180 deg as well as 360 deg protractors for measuring angles as well as a specialised angle measurement tool which can be used to inspect angles between lines and within shapes.

Axis Tool - The axis tool allows students to drag and drop an equation or line onto the axis where it will be automatically graphed. this allows students to explore the features of the equation they are working with.

Box and Whisker - Place box and whisker plots on the page by easily entering values. The plot is created automatically and can be adjusted afterward.

Calculator - FWC links directly into the windows calculator allowing for easy switching between application and calculator.

Snap To - hot spots appear at the ends and middle of lines as well as on 2D shapes to allow the user to easily snap objects together without the need for precise positioning.

Equations - Properly formatted equations can be entered by using the equation editor and these equations can be placed on the canvas or edited later.

Numberline Tool - The numberline tool allows teachers and students to set custom scales and distances on the line. You can even input your own marker values. There is also a convenient jump functionality.

Protractor - The protractor tool accurately recreates the functionality of an actual protractor. It can be set to a distance and hold it's distance and be used to scribe arcs and circles.

Example Files for Secondary Functionality

The file links below show examples of Fun With Construction used in a secondary classroom. Click on the images to download and open the file in FWC. Please note that you must have the Fun With Construction software installed on your computer to open these files.
